Small Ways To Improve Your Home Security System

by Greg Barnes

Investing in a security system is vital for anyone who wants to protect their home from intruders and other potential security issues--but you don't need to have a lot of money to improve your existing security and feel more secure in your home. Here are a few quick, simple things you can do to keep everyone in your household comfortable and safe without breaking the bank or spending hours at work.

  1. Avoid letting your home show signs of emptiness when you're away. Ask a friend to empty your mailbox and use a timer to make sure that lights still turn on and off on a regular schedule.

  2. Burglar alarms and other security systems generally come with window decals to make it clear that your home is protected. Make sure you put these up to deter intruders.

  3. Keep your garden well maintained and your hedges properly trimmed to make your home look cared for and ensure that wannabe intruders can't use them as cover.

  4. Securely lock away tools, ladders and anything else someone could opportunistically use to gain entry to your home.

  5. Install a motion sensor light near every external door to illuminate anyone who might be trying to gain entry that way.

  6. Get to know your neighbours! If they know who to expect seeing around your home, they're more likely to take action on your behalf when something is amiss.

  7. Consider hanging a "beware of the dog" sign somewhere visible, whether you have a dog for real or not! There are also several motion activated devices on the market that sound like a dog barking when someone approaches the house, which can also act as a deterrent.

  8. Don't leave keys, money, jewellery or other valuables in places where they're visible from external windows. Most intruders and opportunistic, and are more likely to make an attempt if they think there's an easy gain to be had.

Still concerned? A security camera system can help.

If you do have a little money to spend, investing it in a good security camera is one of the best things you can do with it. Modern home security cameras are nothing like the CCTV systems of the past--digital cameras can turn themselves on whenever they detect motion rather than running constantly, be controlled remotely from an app on your phone and store data in the cloud for you to review later.

A good burglar alarm is another great investment that doesn't need to break the bank. Make sure you choose one with a tone that will alert neighbours to the problem, and consider picking one that notifies the authorities when it's triggered.
